Professional Packing Tips

Here are a few general suggestions that will make your move easier:

  • First and most importantly, plan your packing.
  • Begin as soon as you know you are moving.
  • Start with items that you don't use often.
  • Separate breakables and non-breakables.
  • Keep boxes to 30 lbs or less.
  • Buy clean newsprint to wrap items and bubble wrap for protection.
  • Fill all boxes completely by using generous amounts of packing material on the bottom, sides and top to provide a good cushion.
  • Use professional packing tape. Masking tape will not be strong enough.
  • Label your boxes by room, so you know exactly where they belong.
  • List the contents on the outside of the boxes.
  • Clearly write "FRAGILE" on all boxes with breakables and stack these on top.
  • Write "Open First" on boxes containing essential items such as cooking utensils, toiletries, etc.
  • Place blankets, heavy towels or furniture pads between larger items to prevent damage and tape down moveable parts.

Packing the big things

  • Beds: Break down and tape bed frames together. Cover with a blanket or furniture pad.
  • Dressers: Secure the drawers with tape or rope. Cover with a blanket or furniture pad.
  • Tables: Remove legs, wrap individually and tie together. Put nuts and bolts in a bag and secure with tape under tabletop.
  • Big appliances: Empty, defrost and drain the refrigerator, freezer and dishwasher.
  • Chairs: Wrap arms & legs with bubble wrap and cover with a blanket or furniture pad.
  • Sofas: Cover with a blanket or furniture pad.

Packing the small things

  • Small appliances: Tape doors closed and cushion with bubble wrap.
  • Books: Pack them flat in small boxes that weigh under 30 lbs.
  • Clothing: Pack hanging items, including drapes, in wardrobe boxes. Leave smaller, lighter items in drawers.
  • Kitchenware: Wrap each piece individually with clean newsprint and cushion with bubble wrap. Put a few of the essential items in the "Open First" box.
  • Dishes: Wrap each piece individually; then wrap no more than three in a bundle with a double layer of clean newsprint. Surround each bundle with crushed paper, being careful not to leave empty space in the box.
  • Toiletries: Place items in individual plastic bags, seal and tape closed for added insurance.

Packing the unique things

  • Family Heirlooms and Collectibles: Wrap fragile items in bubble wrap and pack in well-cushioned boxes. Move these in your vehicle.
  • Computers, TVs, & Electronics: Use original packaging whenever possible or buy custom boxes.
  • Lamp Shades and Bases: Cover with protective paper and pack in well-cushioned boxes.
  • Mirrors, artwork & frames: Wrap small pieces in clean newsprint and pack in well-cushioned boxes. Cover larger pieces with cardboard, tape securely and place them upright in tight areas where they cannot move around.
  • Rugs: Roll up and secure with rope or tape.
  • Plants: Water-well and put in plastic bags with air holes, then in boxes for easier transportation.
  • Bicycles: Loosen the handlebars and turn them sideways. Cover chains and pedals to keep grease off other items.
  • Garden tools: Tape long-handled tools together and wrap with the blades facing inward. Place small ones in boxes.
  • Lawn mowers/power tools: Disconnect the spark plug. Empty gasoline and oil from all tanks, and check for leaks. Wrap the blades to prevent injury.
  • Garage: Never pack combustible/flammable items; throw them away. Use well-ventilated boxes for spray paints, brushes, car waxes, etc.
  • Pets: Always keep them with you.
